In order to maintain control over his vast lands, he formed a contract with his lords/nobles, those directly under him in the hierarchy. the dominant social system in medieval Europe, in which the nobility held lands from the Crown in exchange for military service, and vassals were in turn tenants of the nobles, while the peasants (villeins or serfs) were obliged to live on their lord's land and give him homage, labor, and a share of the produce, notionally in exchange for military protection. This rigid structure of government consisted of monarchs (the king and queen), nobles/lords, vassals/lesser lords, knights, merchants, farmers, craftsman, peasant and serfs, and leaders of the church (who acted as advisors to the king and used the king's land). It was the basis by which the upper classes maintained control over the lower classes. Lords provided protection for serfs serfs provided service for lords. Created by exchanging grants of lands (fiefs) in return for formal, written oaths of allegiance and promises of loyal service greater lords provided protection and aid to lesser lords (vassals) in return for military service. The political and social hierarchy included landlords, vassals, and serfs. _ MILITARY CAUSES: -German Invasions -Weakened Roman legions _ POLITICAL CAUSES: -Oppressive Government -Corrupt officials -Divided empire _ SOCIAL CAUSES: -Erosion of traditional values -Self-serving upper class -"Bread and circuses" _ ECONOMIC CAUSES: -Heavy taxes -Population decline Their fall was a result of Rome not having enough money to support the people that had come from the lands they had conquered. They had people pay large taxes and as a result, people couldn't pay taxes so they moved to cities and accepted welfare from the state. The cause was economic because the fall of Rome had more to do with Rome not having enough money to support their overgrown population.
They weren't getting any money because they had already conquered so much land, and they only thing that brought them money was conquest.
